After TR split from the Republican party over his ideas not being followed and his falling out with Taft , the Republicans were split . When the Democrats nominated Wilson on the 46th ballot over Champ Clark and bypassing Wilson's future Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, wilson's election seemed assured. TR was making a run at Wilson when an assassin 's bullet in Milwaukee slowed him down enough and with the horrible unpopularity Wilson's election was a reality. It should be noted that he only received 43% of the vote while TRand Taft got 51%(TR 28% Taft 23%) with 6% to Debs,a Socialist. What it did set up was a progressive Democratic leadership in the Progressive era of our history of 1901-1925 and a New Freedom was born.

It happened in 1912 and took too dang long to our standards today. Wouldn't want that again.

I didn't vote in that one. :-)
It was a classic case of vote-splitting. Roosevelt & Taft split the heavy Republican vote and allowed Wilson, the Democrat, to win with the lowest percentage of votes other than Lincoln in 1860.
