Mars has either no magnetic field or a very weak one. Why does this fact make it unlikely that life exists at the present time on the suface of Mars?

THEY - WHOMEVER THEY ARE - search endlessly for even the slightest hint of any kind of living microbe whatsoever. I think it's a grandios waste of money better spent on people here on Earth. Also, here on Earth(actually under the sea) THEY have found species of life thought not possible recently. It goes on and on, but the likelyhood of finding anything on Mars is remote and THEY know it. It's the 'hunt' THEY enjoy - finding anything is just a bonus - again a waste of time unless THEY find a cure for cancer or something like that.

Most likely reasons is because of the cold, and water cannot exist in a liquid state. The lack of a magnetic field means there's no shield against solar radiation; while we are somewhat protected here on Earth, on Mars there would be no protection.

No magnetic field means that the solar wind can hit the surface directly (not be deflected around the planet, like on Earth). With the constant bombardment of ionized particles and protons (solar wind) from the Sun, life has very little chance of surviving -- any kind of life as we know it.

low magnetic field doesnt mean squat. magnetic fields to planets are over rated. the earths ley lines are weaker than a childs magnet. mars problem is this no breathable atmosphere and way too dry.

Men are from Mars. They all live on Earth. Women are from Venus.
