Hi, you opened a can of worms here but wil tell you my story. For my son's 16th last year I was looking for a laptop with a budget of £500. The model at that time on the dell site looked ok but to be honest was put off by the advert you see in papers for say £399, you go on the website, pick the same machine and it comes out at like £550 because it automatically picks the 3 year support and 12 months anti virus. This I found very misleading and didn't like the way they do this.

My sister works for a large company and they buy dell for one reason only, price. iasked her advice on buying a dell and she put me off to be honest. She said buy it early in case there was something wrong with it as 1 out of 4 machines was always faulty, but am not sure if this is on laptops or pc's. They ship them with loads of software you don't need and someone has even written a programme called de-crapifier aimed specifically at dell.

I bought an Acer in the end, 5612 wlmi with 1gb ram, 80gig hard drive, 224mb graphics dual layer dvd re-writer and dual core processor. It was £550. Now available from ebuyer for just under £500.

I was that impressed with it that I bought a 3692 wlmi with same spec but single processor from comet for £400. They are both excellent machines and would definately recommend Acer to anyone.

For reliability only time will tell no matter what you buy and by tomorrow it will be yesterdays model. Hope this helps.

Very happy Acer own

Nothing wrong with Acer....... it's a bit cheaper, but still great quality.

Dell are a bit more expensive, so obviously a little bit better - although there have been problems with batteries etc...... (But out of everyone Dell has the best support - especially 'cos the phone centres are in the UK).

I've had an Acer for a couple of years and it hasn't failed me yet, and I use it so much.

As a business supplier I would reccomend either & include HP in that as they have fantastic support.

Acer are really pushing in the market place at the moment and are good for the price. Dell are very robust and generally reliable but not always the quickest ot cheapest once you have put on the extra's.

Whichever you choose, you wont go wrong adding a 3 year waranty though, as unlike a PC you cant just replace all the parts and murphy's law is that if it ever fails its the main board or screen damage and that can cost you dearly out of warranty.

If you loking for overall quality then probably Dell.

Good luck

i might consider many of the persons above that ACER has the lead. this is plenty extra favourite right here in Thailand, and the acer provider is amazingly undemanding to get to, for there are such a good number of provider centers and that they are only scattered everywhere. From my observations, the Acer additionally seems to be extra low fee via particularly a great volume. i do no longer probably see or hear a good number of Dell, yet they may well be good to boot. yet another con on the ACER may well be what I certainly have heard from a lot of human beings asserting that they get particularly heat in case you have it on too long.

I would happily recommend Dell over Acer.

From what I've heard, Acer's aren't as robust as Dell. Though the Dell's aren't the prettiest laptops, they are robust and reliable. My mum has had one for 3 years with no issues. The support site and customer service for purchase is excellent and they offer good value.

I recommend dell laptops. I have a 6-year old dell that runs great. I purchased another for my wife a few years ago and I would get another in a second. If you take care of your computer, it will last a long time.

Dell also has great specials and deals. Find the latest deals at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good luck.

At work we only use Dell (appx 400 laptops).

They are not the slimest or lightest, but they seems to be great workhorses. Good support too.

That said, nothing wrong with a better grade Acer.

I haven't been too impressed with my friends Acer. Dell's are usually heavier but they work and are fairly sturdy.
