For years before the outbreak of the war, Churchill was arguing that war was coming. He was ignored by a pacifist government until war had become inevitable. At this point Chamberlain brought Churchill back into the Government. When Chamberlain was forced to resign in disgrace, Churchill was the only candidate for the job. His was a difficult position though, as the country was very poorly prepared.

Why does anybody want to become Prime Minister?

To respond to the following answer... Churchill recognised the threat of Hitler long before the war. When Churchill took the position of Prime Minister we'd lost our greatest ally (France) a lot of soldiers and all our artillery. We were alone against the greatest army on the planet. When Churchill had started speaking about the coming war, Hitler was much weaker. His army wasn't nearly ready, he hadn't re-taken the Rhineland. We had a very strong ally in France and Russia had approached to discuss an alliance, which we rejected.

The incredibly slow build-up to the war cost us dearly. If you have any sources saying otherwise, please reference them.

Churchill was both a charismatic speaker and had an extremely aggressive to the much hated German Nazis. This helped Churchill gain support among the masses which became a major political force after WWI. Why would he want to be Prime Minister? What British politician wouldn't love that opportunity?

Chamberlain was an unabashed peacenic who bought us the time to prepare for war with his prevaricating. Churchill was an unabashed war monger and the only one in the world w. the cohonies to lead the last major Empire into a war against fascism. Come the man, come the hour.
Wrong above answer, if we'd gone when Churchill wanted we'd have been beaten and we'd all be speaking German now.
