Don't listen to anyone until you test drive the VXR yourself....

The VXR will make the GTI EAT DUST
trust me, I had a 2006 GTI and fair enough its a V-dub
but it lacks sportyness, sexyness and main importantly the raciing feeling of a High End car.....

I asked the same question for 2 months since Dec 2006 and most prefered the VXR due to it being much faster and sexier,
VRX has the Looks of coupe/sporthatch in ONE, add a dump valve and that will definatley get most ladies WET....lol Trust me because I ended up BUYING THE 2007 model earlier this month.....
I have been careful with the engine, because its tooo fresh but Trust me it flys, I just laugh at the GTI boyRacers---coz they can't catch up---hahahahahahaaaaa
-lol

Get the Golf, its a much better built car and it has better resale value.I have had 2 GTi's and 2 Passats one Astra and 2 Vectra's.
Take a look round both and look at the shut lines on the doors and bonnet. The Astra will have a different size gap wherever you look but on the Golf everything will fit exactly like all the panels were made to measure. Then just look at the general build quality and see how much cheap plastic adorns the interior of the Astra.
Then of course you have got the lovely blue back lighting on the golf when you drive at night.
If you can afford it get the V5 , the engine sounds lovely!

I am going to take a chance and say you will get more votes for the Golf. Over the years, my family has often been taken in by a Volkswagen product and purchased one of their cars. Each and every one of them have been major disappointments and break a lot and are very very expensive to get fixed. Just new plug wires for a Jetta run more than $90 American. I vote Astra VXR.

all I can say is you are lucky to have to be asking this question in the first place, both cars are on the top of everyones list.

The GTi is more expensive but has more long term value and reliability but the astra is a little quicker. However they have just bought out the new Golf Gti aniversary which is a bit more but has more BHP and even more style!!

Astra.

Volkswagons, in my opinion, are overrated. Yes, they feel solid, but I don't think they are any more reliable than other Euro hatchbacks, and no match for the Japanese in this area. Also, VW dealers are expensive and can be a bit aloof in my experience.

The Astra, I would suggest, is a more hard core machine. Vauxhalls have improved greatly in recent years.

If it was my money, though, I'd get a Honda Civic Type R.
