Canadians elect regional politicians to be Members of Parliament (MPs) for their electoral area (riding). Ridings are decided by a combination of geography and population. The total number of elected MPs is 308 and they sit in the House of Commons in Ottawa, Ontario - where they propose, debate and legislate bills and laws. The House of Commons is also referred to as "the lower house" - once bills are passed they must be voted on by the upper house (the Senate) a group appointed, usually senior politicians.
The Prime Minister is the leader of the party(s) that holds the majority of seats in the House of Commons - if he or she loses the confidence of the House (ie has a majority opposing them) then the Governor General (who is the Queen's representative in Canada) must dissolve Parliament and hold a general election.
Canada is a constitutional monarchy - and our head of state is her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Canada is made up of ten provinces and three territories who have their own legislatures and a degree of autonoomoy as granted by the federal government.
