I don't want to add the hard drive to the new pc. I just want to get a number of files off the old hard drive and transfer them to the new pc. I heard there was a tool that you could connect to your hard drive and then USB into the new pc for file transfer. Thanks for the help.

I would just stick it in the new computer personally.

but you could buy an adapter that will convert IDE and SATA to USB for the old hard drive.

or you could get an external enclosure. I own this one and love it.

The easist way to do this is to install the old drive in the new machine as a slave or secondary drive.

Most hard drive have small jumpers that allow you to customize which drive boots first.

Set your new drive as the Master(Primary). Connect the old drive as Slave(Secondary) and boot your machine.

The old drive will usually be seen in Windows as drive D: or E:. Just copy over what you want to keep.

Only "tool" I can think of that you're talking about is an EXTERNAL Hard Drive case that has a USB Connection.
