A cravat is that lacy thing that men used to wear before ties came into style. You know that frilly thing that Austin Powers wears with his velvet lounge suits or the thing the Quaker oatmeal guy has around his neck? Those are cravats.

It's a type of tie akin to an ascot--you know, like Fred wears. Cravats are usually more lacy though. For a more exact description, try wikipedia.

For the Iranians and the French, it means a necktie (aka tie).

The word may have originally meant a special kind of tie though.
