Playoff game #2 is tonight and we won our first game in part by crashing the zone. I am curious however to know when it is the best time to play dump and chase offense--by that I mean crossing the red line and firing the puck into the offensive zone past the defensemen. One of my linemates wants it the other says we're to reluctant to walk the puck in. I'll do whatever, but I'm curious about when the best time is to do it. I usually try when I'm tired and need to come off to dump the puck.

Dumping the puck is more effective if you have fast forwards that can get to the puck first or can keep the puck in the zone. It sounds like you team will be more effective if they use this strategy against a slow or tired defense and can catch them off guard. Otherwise, stick to what go you into the playoffs and into the second round.

Shorthanded: Always dump and chase
Even strength: If you are tired and want to get off, do not try to pass it between the red and blue lines. Softly dump it into the corner, or if you see your other winger, ring it around the end boards to him. Also, if you see that they have slow defencemen, pick on that and dump it in, and beat them to the puck. Make sure it doesn't get behind the net, or goes around fast or else the goalie will play it. Lastly, as a set play you can slow down at the red line, draw the defencemen towards you, and then fire it around the boards to your streaking winger.
Power play: NEVER use the dump in at all costs. With an extra man, you should be able to carry it in and retain possesion and set up the powerplay. Even if you are tired, you don't have to skate too hard on the pp. If you can develop a pp system involving the dump-in, great, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Alot of teams will start with the dump and chase. Most times this will back the defence off as they will try to cheat early to get back for the dump in. This will allow your guys a bit more room to skate the puck over the line. It's always good to mix it up. A couple lines try to skate the puck in and the other line dump and chase.
Dumping the puck in also eliminates neutral zone turn-overs, allows your defence to not get caught off guard.
Dump and chase is very effective, it wears down the defence big time. Be sure sure to dump into the corner of the weakest skating defencemen.
As far as not dumping in on the power-play? Well, you have the man advantage, it's never a bad idea to get the puck down low and wear down their defence. True it's nice to beable to skate the puck over the line and get the pp set up, however, some nights nothing seems to work... dump and chase, never fails.

Good luck!

If you are good at skating the puck, then try to do that before resorting to dumping it.
Otherwise, if you're outnumbered by the defenseman and you have no one to pass to dump it, but try not to wrap it around the boards because then it makes it easier for the defenseman to get. Try to get it high off the glass so that it deflects and goes behind the net to make it harder to play.

Dump it when the defensemen are lined up at their blue line to stop you and then chase it and beat them to it.
