It must be 12 point font. However, as we learned in college, not all 12 point fonts are the same size- Courier 12 point is about the same size as Times New Roman 14. But be warned- most professors do know this! So, if you want your paper to look longer less suspiciously and still be 12 point font, try to find something in between Times New Roman and Courier- preferably one of the more normal looking fonts.

Twelve points is a good size. It is easy to read and the difference between it an ten points is not much in terms of space occupied but the difference is in terms of comfort when reading. You do not want anyone to be discouraged from giving your paper the attention it deserves simply because the font was too small

Your teacher would have the best answer - she may tel you 14 and you wrote to much - she may say 10 and you did not write enough. Most likely it is 12 like most have said but I had a teacher last semester that let us use 14 font!

12 points is usually the required size for a professional/formal paper or letter.

I'd say 12, in most fonts. Unless, of course, your professor has specified what to use.
