must pass the written and driving test, same as for a vehicle. the driving test is limited compared to a car test, no they dont ride with you, lol, but must watch you. Go to a hick town to get it. I had to drive to the corner, turn around and come back.

That will vary from state to state.
Here's one that's typical:
1. Take the written test for a car.
2. Take the written test for a motorcycle!
3. Under the supervision of a DMV person, you ride your motorcycle around some cones and through some painted lines in the parking lot (it's easier to do this on a small motorcycle).

In Indiana is where I got my motorcycle endorsement on my license. I had to take a permit test and hold it for 6 months then I had to take an approved driving class which is available through ABATE. You will have to complete a safety class and an obstacle course. Theres a written and practical portion to the test. The best thing to do is check with your local DMV. They have all the necessary information you would need and your individual state requirements. Hope this helps.

I got my permit first by taking the written test. I put about 100 miles on it around my neighborhood, learning the gears and braking at stop signs, and taking off.
Then I took the motorcycle course and passed it after a weekend of classes.
I then went to the DMV, they took my picture and got my license!
I didn't have to do the dreaded circle since I took the motorcycle safety course.

Depending on where you live, each state maybe be different. Here in NJ, you first have to get a permit. Which requires you reading the motorcycle manual. Then with the permit you would take a class on learning how to ride. If you already know how to ride a motorcyle then skip that, and just schedule to do your driving test.

That will change by state, but what is constant is the need to complete a motorcycle safety class. I had over 10,000 miles under my belt, but had been without a bike for about 10 years when I decided to get a new bike. I wanted to get my "sea legs" under me in a safe environment AND on their tiny beat up bikes, not my brand new $25K Harley. The insurance savings alone paid for the class and as I always do (I've taken it 5 times in 25 years), I learn new, better, and safer skills. Fair winds to you, and keep the shiney side up.

Check with your state and find out if you take the motorcycle safety course and pass if you have to take the driving test with the state. The motorcycle safety course teaches you the proper way to ride.

I took the course one weekend, went in to the DMV on Monday morning and took my permit test. When I passed I handed them the card showing I passed the course and they gave me a new drivers license with the motorcycle endorsement.

A few states make you take a course. Just about all states make you take a special written test specific for motorcycle and then you provide your own bike, and your own escort car with driver for the DMV official so they can ride behind you for the road checkout.

It depends on your state yo are living in. Most states require that if you are under 21 you must take a motorcyle riding course approved by the state. You then have to take a test at the DMV and you will get your permit. Then you take your test monitored by a proctor. If you are over 21 you just have to take the written test to get your permit. Then take the proctored riding test to get your license endorsed.

I don't know where you live, but in the state of TN you can actually take a $250 class for two days and when you complete the course all you have do is go to the drivers testing center and they will put it onto your license!
