can i somehow see what's left in the cartridge? it's just a basic usb plug in and go printer. so it doesn't tell me automatically if it's low on ink or not.

Don't listen to anybody telling yyou to get a new printer. Your printer although slow has the highest capacity cartridges ever introduced for a consumer level printer. Sure there are not a lot of features but the quality is good.
If ou have let the printer sit for a number of months, the colour cartridge has dried out. You may want to try a few more print head cleanings before replacing the colour cartridge.
If you see no imprivemnet in the oclor after about 4 print head cleanings and priming then your cartridge is dry or out of ink. Replace the cartridge and you will be fine.

Do a test print. It should work as follows:
Feed in a blank paper. Switch on the printer. Press and hold the power switch. Open and close the top printer cover. Do it three times and then release the power switch. It should start printing a test page. The quantitiy of colors will tell you whether you are out of ink.

Hi. First check your cartridge by using the "Clean" function built into most printers. Then make sure your image is not being told to print gray-scale. Then get a new cartridge.
Edit. bunnie is probably right. Sometimes new ink costs almost as much as a brand new printer.

There is One Setting that u can change...
1)Go to Controll Panel and then to printers and faxes...
2)Rt click the printer Icon(Hp deskjet 840 series) and select the option "Printing Preferences"
3)Browse through the Tabs on the Top and Look for -->>Print Quality/Speed .uncheck any option that says Greyscale and select Coloured Printing.
If it does not work the colour cart is gone bad,u will have to call HP1 800 474 6836

Howzit!
Check if its not out of ink.. If not then check (using the printer software) if your settings are not set to 'Print using one black cartridge'.... this might be the problem.
If all the above steps do not solve the problem then your cartridge nozzles are probably blocked. Get them cleaned using the printer software. If this doesn't work (use a soft moist cloth)
NB: You did not get the soft moist cloth from me, the guys from HP do not reccommed it but it worked for me. (only once though)
Good luck

in case you basically offered it from a save, go back it for a clean one in case you basically had it refilled, them truly probably some ink went into the incorrect ink tank, causing the colors to regulate. meaning that's time to change it
