This is a very good question, actually. I was asking something like this the other day.
At what point, do we spend so many of our resources (human AND financial) trying to obtain someone else's freedom that we irretrievably damage our own country? How many dead U.S. soldiers is enough? How much money does this war have to cost us? And is it a wise investment at all? Are we that terribly sure that democracy will translate well into the Middle East?
We're not fighting for our freedom, we're fighting for theirs. The first step toward truth is admitting that. Sure, IF their freedom manages to stick, we MAY have long-term benefits, way, way, way down the road. But will we have lost enough by then that the benefits don't outweigh the cost?
Very good question. Thanks for posting it.

Con: if we pull out of Iraq, Iraq will descend into complete chaos with different factions fighting each other. Eventually Iraq will become a puppet of Iran. If Iran gains more power, they would probably attack Israel and then the US.
Pro: Creating another stable democracy in the middle east will give the US a very helpful ally

you have to understand the mindset of middle eastern people. (I have had long discussions with quite a few about this) they view the world in terms of generations compared to decades in the states. but the major thing is the belief in shame, honor and meaning behind things. We here cannot understand how they look at things. People like OBL would see a defeat as a weakening of the US power and a strengthening of theirs. They have made constant mention of this from references to Vietnam, Kosovo, Mogadishu and our troubles in the Sunni triangle. It must end on our terms or it will exacerbate the current situation...

Con.....more American lives lost. The high finacial cost of war...the debt will be left to future generations. Also, we are losing international repect. There is no victory plan, and we've lost the battle of hearts and minds.
Pro....I can't think of any.

I can't think of any reason to stick it out in Iraq. We've done enough damage and enough people have already died. That's enough reason for most.
