It is a circle of people jumping on eachother to music... they usually leave VERY bruised... sometimes bleeding... and they think it is fun..

it's pretty much what the first answer said... it's very useful if you need to release some pent up aggression without anyone taking it serious or getting your @ss kicked for it... I love to go to my brother's shows simply for the fact that I spend the whole night in the mosh pit and leave feeling alot less stressed... mind you i have left with a couple of busted lips, a black eye, plenty of bruises the next day but it's so much fun...

Typical at Punk shows, it's violent pushing/shoving type dancing done in a small area of the crowd. My foot got broken by being too close to one.
