A preliminary check should take about 24 hrs. A more extensive one will be quite a bit longer - up to a week.

That depends on how quickly the employer obtains your consent and gets your info to the background check firm, and also on what is being checked. Most checks take about a week.

If they need to verify education which was obtained overseas, or if you're applying for a position that requires a security clearance, it could take longer - up to several weeks depending on the clearance level.

Depends on how they do it. Where I work it's done over the net and we get results in a matter of seconds. Other places do it the old fashion way and it can take up to 3-5 days to get the results.
