lol, big mistake asking this question, you've started a war.
Everyone will tell you different, the truth is, you need to decide on what you like to do. If you do only designing, the mac is more reliable. If you do gaming, Windows, if you do online work, Linux. I'll personally always use a PC for the fact that they're customizeable. It controls my whole room with a remote control when I use Linux. Windows still DOMINATES the software world, but the new macs have the exact same hardware as a 1/2 of their price PCs. 10 people after me are gonna say "You can emulate Windows on Mac, so it's better" whoever does, just ignore their post, you can emulate anything on anything, it doesn't make it Windows.
It's all about marketing, Macs TELL you they're better and overprice their products. 3GB 667MHz RAM on the mac site is $800 for PC it's $200, SAME PRODUCT. Microsoft on the other hand doesn't sell you the hardware, so you get more options and competitive hardware and pricing.

A good PC built with graphics power in mind for gaming or CAD, etc. will perform just as well as a Mac, if not better. That graphics bias hasn't been true for years, IMO. And like you said, with the world dominated by PC's, it's just not worth the hassles and the higher cost. My wife changed jobs awhile back and she HAS to use a mac now at work and she says it's a constant pain with all the things you CAN'T do with them that you are used to doing with a PC. I think she means shortcut types of things that we all do without thinking about them as well as web-based issues while using the internet.
It seems to me most Mac buyers do so with some kind of chip on their shoulders, that is, they all seem to have a similar attitude or bias about life in general. Hard to pin it down and, besides, I'm only generalizing anyway.
As others have said, you are definitely going to start a war with this query! lol

well most people say that mac are great for graphical design, and yes thats all they are good for. not gaming etc..
i would advise getting a pc since u can get all the same programs u can get for a mac on pc but the programs are just better. and you will save a fortune in between getting a pc to a mac.
since a half decent mac is about $1500 and for the same amount of money u could get pc worth $2000.

If you are worried about not having Windows, as long as the iMac is a new model (the ones with Intel chips), you can run Windows on it as well with bootcamp (a free Apple product).

Well, for graphic design Macs do perform very well. But if you get a dual-processor PC with hyper threading, that also would work well.
Don't get a single processor PC.

PC'S Suck, especially for graphic design. And they always crash. But there easier to fix and upgrade.
