They were described as such because the women were from impoverished conditions and they had suffered horrible loses at the hands of "vigilantes" who were killing their families and raping the women and girls as young as 3. The rage and hunger as well as abuse made these women fierce fighters and wild protectors of their families. By acting in an insane manor many of the predatory groups of the time would stay away believing their work was done.
These women held their family together at any cost and kept the home as safe as they could in a very dark time.
