Research Project=Usually a research essay that you do during your Undergraduate studies. It is not necessarily "original research." But you need to use plenty of outside sources to back up your main argument. You are basically researching a topic using outside sources.

Thesis=Usually a minimum of 150 pages of "original research" and done for a Master's program. While you need to have a literature review, which describes what has already written about your topic, you will need to not rely so much on outside sources when writing your thesis.

Dissertation=Much, much longer than a Thesis, and this is usually done at the end of a PhD program.

The similarities between these 3 is that they are all thesis-driven (proving that the main argument you are trying to make is in fact valid).

Hope that's not too vague & hope I helped!
