thank you for all of your marvelous answers, when you are older and don't understand modern technology, it may happen, :) you will be like me and almost cry when people like you are so kind and helpful. I didn't know I could reformat my ruined hard drive and of course they were more than happy to sell me a new one for a huge price. Younger people especially need to understand that technology is changing so fast and for us over 50, a lot of us don't have the basics from childhood. So thanks !!!! The sugar and the ants really gave me a good mind picture.

You are being just a little bit paranoid about hackers and "bad guys," but maybe you have a reason for that. The first thing you need to do is change your profile and NOT allow anyone to email you. That's how trouble starts.

There is no excuse for losing hard drives to viruses. The two best antivirus programs are Avast Home and AVG 7.5, and they are free. With either one of them installed, you will not have a virus get to your hard drive to destroy it.

The next step is to protect your computer from spyware, and again, the two best are free: SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. If you immunize the computer in SpyBot, then run a full bot check once a week, you won't have spyware. If you keep Ad-Aware updated and run a Smart Scan daily, you won't have any other spyware or malware. Then you and your computer are protected against the things hackers and bad guys do to computers. If you are truly ancient, you'll remember the song "The Best Things in Life are Free!"

AVG offers a free virus protection package. It has always done well for me.
As far as worrying about hackers on here....I don't know, I guess that they could be out there, but I am willing to take the risk for now. I have met several really nice people since becoming a member of this site. I have other groups online that I am a part of and would consider this one to be just as safe as those.
If you have a SPAM blocker up on your email it should help to at least get your attention of a possible problem before you get into it.
Just make sure that you never open any attachments or zip files as they can unleash a monster into your computer.

Hope this helps sweetie!

The only way to lose a hard drive is for it to either burn out or physically break!

Otherwise, you can always reformat it and keep using it! The age of the computer has nothing to do with it.

ALL computers are at risk! No computer is completely safe! No software can catch remove every virus/mal ware that is out there!

Lucee is absoulutely right. Put sugar on the ground outside your front door and you invite ants and insects to your door and beyond. Protect yourself from the front with any program that is compatable to your system through CNET.com. Raise the Firewall protection level to protect yourself from the insects invading from the back. Good Luck.

So long as you do not follow hyperlinks (and then put in information, even if it looks like yahoo page) and never download a file from anyone that isn't a sound or video or picture file... you should be safe...

Just always make sure the URL says www.yahoo.com before you put your info in.

yes. Unfortunately bad guys can always get you. The absolute best way to avoid them doing any damage to your computer is to only go online in an account with no administrative privileges.
