We are having new carpet installed in our family room next week. Is it possible to somehow run an electrical cord under the carpet to a reading lamp that is near the center of the room (about 5' from the nearest wall socket)? Presently, the lamp cord is partially tucked under an area rug that sits on top of the carpet. But we plan to get rid of this area rug once the new carpet is laid. We don't want someone to accidentally trip over the cord.

DO NOT install an extension cord under a rug. The wear and tear on the cord from walking over it will wear away the insulation, and a fire is sure to result. Relocate the lamp. Or, install a floor receptacle. The Wiremold Company does make a raceway for cable on top of the floor. It is metal and shaped so as not to be a trip hazard. You can buy it at an electrical supply store.

You really don't want to run an electrical cord under a rug. The cord can get worn from the foot traffic and if the insulation wears and the wires touch they can spark and catch the rug on fire. The best thing to do is get an electrician to wire a plug near the lamp.

Is there a basement under the room? It sounds like this is a normal location for your lamp. Have you considered installing a floor recepticle in the area? You could run the wiring in the basement from your breaker box to the new recepticle. They do make them.

Use no. 10 Twin cord and run it to the ceiling and staple it with an insullated U nail. Make sure not do damage the cord
