She used to work for the Salvation Army collecting donations at Christmas time. Unfortunately her carpal tunnel was aggravated by the repetitive motion of swinging the bell in a circular arc.
Therefore she used to solicit volunteers to aid her in this endeavor, thus the term "you can ring my bell." It was her way of getting assistance. One day on a blustery cold December 21st, a record executive heard her singing the song and signed her to a fabulous record deal.
The rest was as they say "disco history."
