you dim wit, it doesn't, what about the signals in space attenuate in proportion to the square of the distance they travel?

The inverse-square law applies to any point-source radiator of any frequency. Rarely is the radiator an actual point source, so other formulas must be applied in what's called the "near field". For non-point source radiators, the "far" field can still be approximated very accurately by the inverse-square law.
