We are about to service our boat engine - got a manual and basic tools etc but just found that the manual doesn't cover ours which is a rope start engine. Can anyone help me with what are the main things we need to check, I've looked for this information on the internet and can't find it anywhere so I am hoping you can help.

New spark plugs
Drain & replace lower unit gear oil (Check for water intrusion "Milky Color" is bad)
New water pump replacement (after every 2 years of service "80 hours" total running time)
check prop
Grease the Tilt tube, and pivot pin with marine grease, and a grease gun
discard old fuel and mix fresh fuel
use "Carbon Guard" fuel additive to keep the engine running clean, "carbon" is the enemy, and the fuel quality now stinks.
Flush the engine after each use with a garden hose, and rabbit ears.
Fall: Drain fuel from tank, add "Fogging oil" to engine, for winter storage, this drives out water, and lubricates the internal parts, store engine in running position (Verticle) to drain the water out of the head, so it does NOT freeze and crack the head. If your engine is a rope start then its pretty simple to service, you'll need spark plugs (make sure you get the rigth ones) go to the store with one if you dont know what to look for, you'll also have to take down the carburatore and pen it for any stuff or any unwanted paricules in the system but the most you'll find is water in the carburator and thats bout it but if your really into boats and are a little more confortable working in the engine then you should also change your gear oil, check the impeller make sure its greased and that none of the flippers are missin or damaged, check your coil and wires for any electrical hasards check the head for any leaks and last but no least rinse the engine in clean fresh water and spray it dowon with justice brothers or wd-40 but i recomend justice brothers and for your enegine to have a longer life you should rinse it after each outings with freah water ever if you were in a fresh water lake you still need to rinse it. :-)

just go by the manual you have and disregard the parts about batteries, starters, etc.
