A homosexual teacher and his same-sex partner launched a complaint with the British Columbia (CANADA} Human Rights Commission, complaining that the school curriculum was not Gay inclusive or Gay positive. As a result . Murray and Peter Corren made a settlement with the Board of Education which gave them unpresidended control over the public school curriculum. The agreement makes it clear that parents and student will not be allowed to opt-out of this curriculum even if it goes gainst their moral beliefs. Many parents, of different religions ,ethnical backgrounds have already taken their children out of the public school system and into private schools .With the increasingnumber of students opting to private schools, and the decrease in financial funding.isn't it the public school children that suffer in the end?

It definitely should be optional. I hate to see anyone cramming their lifestyle down other people's throats. However, politics is not always fair or right. That's why a people should be involved with their legislators.

Yes, it is those who are left in public schools that lose. I am a 56 year old recently retired elem teacher. Many years ago, like in 1970's when I was in college, they predicted that the public school system would collapse by the year 2000. I'm not sure just what should happen, but something definitely needs to change. I would say off the top of my head, the public school system needs a radical make over. As long as it is not profit oriented, like Walmart, for then they won't care if the kids learn, they will only want to make money. There is so much politics that goes on that parents have no clue about. All parents are "bad parents" if they don't go to their child's school at least one hour each year and sit thru the class, because your teeth would fall out if you really knew what goes on. When you make expensive purchases, do you do so without much research ? How valuable are your children ??? they spend most of their day, usually at least 6 hours exposure at the school. I am not against public school, but you are right that the current choices need HUGE fixing. ANd I think it will only come when parents unite and demand something instead of accepting the lip service you are getting from the school admin and state ed dept. Quite a strong opinion, no ? But I LOVE children and want the best for all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are getting so so short changed.

Not sure i agree that they were given unprecendeted control over the curriculum, noone should have that absolute power! However, if you talk about a free and democratic society, then the parents need to accept that homosexuality is a choice that is permitted in such as a society and that edecuation about tolerance and respect for peoples choices is necessary to maintain that freedom, they can teach there kids their own beliefs at home and this provides a balanced perspective upon which their children can make up their own minds.

Then is it OK for students to opt out of any subject they don't like or disagree with? Isn't that like the old communist way of hiding the facts and changing history?
Surely education is about giving facts and with all the relevant info students can then make judgments for themselves. The more we learn, the more we hope to understand each other.
