How many ultrasounds does a woman have during a normal pregnancy?

Depends on the dr. Mine only ordered 1 at 20-22 weeks. Some drs will have one every trimester. Also, I see people answering "1 to find out the gender", your dr will NOT order an u/s to find out the gender. That's not the intent AT ALL. Ultrasounds are meant to be diagnostic, not for fun- gender GUESSING is a fun side part to u/s but it's not the intent or purpose!

It depends on your insurance. Generally you will get an ultrasound the first visit to confirm pregnancy and check accuracy of the dates in the first trimester. Then a complete ultrasound at 18-20 weeks for the purpose of checking the well being of your baby. If your baby cooperates with their position, you may be able to check the sex of your baby too. Sometimes you can opt for as many ultrasounds you want.

My cousin thought she didn't get enough ultrasounds so she went to the emergency room and said she thinks something is wrong and she got another one. Her pregnancy was normal.

I only had two... one when I first found out (shortly after) and the second at 5 months and I found out the sex of my baby. If you are high risk then they will give you more. Some places will do ultrasounds upon request, like if you are scared something is wrong and that will calm your nerves, along with the ones they order. Every where is different and every pregnancy is different... so really there are a few factors in it as to how many you get.
Pretty sure the norm is 2 though.

Generally 1-3... You can have the optional nucal screen at 9-13 weeks... the standard is the 18-20 week, and if you are over due, you will most likely have one, or if there are concerns from the nucal you will have a triple screen in the third trimester...
That does not mean you won't have more than that, I ended up having 10 for my newborn, because there were concerns they were following...
It really depends on your doc, and the results of the ultrasound...

It depends on your doctor, but some have as many as 7. You need to do some research. Just because something is the norm doesn't mean it is good for you. In the newspaper a month ago there was an artical where the American Institute for Ultrasound Technology stated, "We do not recommend ultrasounds unless there is a medical reason." Hmmm-you have to wonder what they are finding out and why they are trying to cover themselves. If you think there is a problem definetly have one, but I went through my whole pregnancy without one ultrasound and everything was great and healthy. If you do have one, please limit it. When x-rays first came out they used them on pregnant women and even in high-end shoe stores. Then they realized they weren't as safe as they thought and now there are restrictions on them. I wonder what future restrictions will be on ultrasounds that aren't today. Better to be safe than sorry.

Totally depends on the doctor and the clinic. Clinics that have the machine there in the office tend to make higher use of them.

But be careful. There have been some studies in the past few years showing a relation between the number of ultrasounds and damage to the unborn child's hearing. There hasn't been anything conclusive, though.

So you should research it yourself and decide how you want to act. I decided better safe than sorry and told my doctor I only wanted absolutely necessary ultrasounds, so I only had one at 22 weeks.

Normally the doctor will give 2 sometimes 3 unless the baby doesn't seem to be as big as they think it should be or if they think something may be wrong. You can have as many as you want to have but you have to pay for them. The 3-d ultrasounds are great for finding out the sex of the baby

Lol, you're gonna laugh, but I had 9 so far and I'm 23 weeks. The first 3 were at free clinics confirming there was a baby alive and well with a heartbeat (and the third diagnosed me with high levels of sugar in my urine, so they sent me to the ER...that was at 10 weeks pregnancy, at the ER I was diagnosed with diabetes, so they had the hospital I was staying at give me 1 to check out the baby. (4 so far..you with me) Then my new prenatal doctor gave me my 12 week ultrasound to get familiar with the baby. Had 1 at 15 weeks again to check growth. Then the free clinic called me again and said they wanted me to come back for a free ultrasound...that was at 18 weeks. we're at 7 so far....then I had one at 20 weeks to check gender and growth again. I'm getting one on March 23 for an EKG for the baby because I have diabetes. That's 9 by 24 weeks....kinda scary

I think it depends on your insurance. And also if you're high-risk or not.

I had about 8 before I was even 28 weeks, but I was a high-risk pregnancy...about 3 of those ultrasounds were done IN the hospital the day-of and the day before I gave birth (at 27.4 weeks).

Usually 2, but with my doctor everytime I went in she did an ultrasound. I have so many pictures of my daughter.. The reason I got one was because she had a machine in her office and she did them to check the progress of the baby.. It was a very neat experience getting to see the baby at each visit... Now I have switched doctors because we moved and I havent even had one done yet... And I am 9 weeks and 3 days..
