Shakey's was the first of the franchised pizza restaurants to make a move on the Philippine market. It's not the greatest, but, after all these years, it still knows how to please the Filipino palate.

Indeed, Shakey's was the very first US-based pizza corp. to open a franchise in the Phils. - that was in mid 1960s - long before most of you were born! At that time and for a long time, there was just one location (along EDSA near Cubao).
And while Filipinos were generally not pizza-eating people, they were drawn to novelty of Shakey's for two reasons 1) it was the cool place to be seen and 2) they liked the curb service. And the owner (& his family) - Amerikano - was genuinely friendly. They would openly mix with the customers and everyone was just having a great time.
When I left in 1984, Shakey's was still going strong (more branches) and the pizza business was really booming (lots of other "brands"). Surely a lot more has happened since then.
Thanks for the opportunity to go down memory lane.
BTW, Filipinos then called it "pizza pie" - is this still true now?

Chain stores licensed to other countries while carrying the brand do not always carry with them the exact recipe from the original country where the products were made and first introduced.
They try to introduce the original mix and taste, but have to adapt to sell. Remember, most of the cooks are hired locally, and would therefore cook the food to their taste.
The reason why Jollibee has immediately beaten McDonald's in the hamburger business here in the Philippines is that from the start, the products are already Filipino in taste.
While Filipinos love to experiment and try whatever is the newest food in town, they eventually patronize that which really suits their taste, one that is produced locally, like the Greenwich Pizza which is now under the umbrella of Jollibee group of companies. Shakey's has been here for a while now, therefore does not really sell that much anymore.

Shakkey's Pizza is so popular in the Philippines because it's foreign in nature. We like western influences. In the 90's Shakkey's added a Live Bands to their restaurant which plays every night. We already love the pizza, especially the Manager's Choice, and combine it with a live rock bands, beer, and you can smoke inside the restaurant, what more could you ask for?
So people go there for food and entertainment. Shakkey's becomes a part of our society, it already left a deep mark into our hearts. Later in yr 2000, there were no longer live bands, it became a family pizza parlor. The pizza is still the same, so we still go for the taste and for the feel that we are eating in a nice California based Pizza parlor.

I ate at a shakeys pizza in the philippines in robinsons ermita. I was so surprised to see it there as i grew up eatting shakeys here in california. I did notice a big lack of pizza places in the philippines though. So i guess when you dont have a choice, you go for whats available.

I don't know--however I am from California (Bay Area) and never saw/ate/heard of Shakeys until I travelled here. Some restaurants do better in another place. For example, in the states Pizza Hut is crap, however out here it is actually better. On the flip side, I prefer Max's in the states versus here (where it originated). The chickens are larger and not as oily as here.

Large chains can be popular far away from their place of birth. McDonalds was originally from California as well, who can tell today?
Also, I doubt the Philippines has a strong native pizza industry, other companies come in to take up the slack (remember that the Philippines were a US protectorate for a number of years)

Shakeys did great for a while here in the US, then faltered and looked elsewhere and found a home in the RP. I assume it did well because they are all over the place, even up in Dagupan and Baguio. What's funny is you take your pinoy friends out to one and they all order fried chicken and rice, haha. BTW, pizza hut does well there also.

Filipinos relish food and enjoy eating out.
If you observe the restaurants, there is usually a patron.
