Why do my laptop speakers screech?

I bought a cheap pair of speakers for my laptop. When I raise the volume on either the laptop or the speakers, it's screeches (a high pitch noise of distorsion, not sure if that's called ''screeching").

I can I resolve this problem? Should I keep the laptop volume down and only raise the speakers volume? What explains the screeching sound?

It's feedback from the microphone. Move them away from the mic, or turn the mic gain down (or off if possible).
