what are good ways of keeping a houes cold in the summer.
other then haveing the a/c on and the fans with the blinds down?

The clothesline is a great idea.

Also use your microwave instead of your oven. It cooks faster and without the extra heating in your home.

Tin foil with the shiny side out on southern exposed windows.

Fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs because they cost less to run and they don't produce heat.

Use ceiling fans or box fans around your home to circulate the air. Moving air feels cooler and less stale and stagnant.

Dark curtains and blinds.

Insulate the same areas you would if you were trying to keep warm.

Keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible.

And keep your A/C on. Set it at a temperature you can deal with and leave it there. Its the up and down cycling of an A/C or heating system that raises your bill.

Open blinds on north facing windows and close blinds on sunny sides.
Install a whole house fan
Do not cook, launder, etc., during the day.

We have a 1500 sq ft house and installed two attic fans two years ago. Those combined with a better, more airtight duct system cut our electric bills greatly!

Insullating your walls ang roof will help maintain house temperature. Adding double sided aluminum insullation in between wall panels is a solution. It prevents radiation from coming in

Try to run your clothes dryer and range at night when the house is coolest, or use an outdoor grill and a clothesline..

my husband is having a fan installed in our attic that will blow the hot air out and it is suppose to keep it cooler in the house...it makes sence hot air rises fan blows it out....
