Often with younger girls that play very strenuous sports (gymnastics) or sports that require a lot of training, they can delay hormone development (puberty) because of low body fat and thus delay their start of their menstruation.
Both men and women need a certain amount of fat which is essential to bodily functions. Fat regulates body temperature, cushions and insulates organs and tissues and is the main form of the body's energy storage.
Older women with too low body-fat percentages can also stop menstruating, a serious condition (called amenorrhea) that can cause premature bone loss due to insufficient estrogen production.

Hard-core athletes do delay the onset of puberty, but ordinary athletes don't. If you are training for the olympics, if your thighs are big because your muscles are too built, you might fall into that category. Just playing sports a few times a week won't do this to you though. Mostly, you just see this with national-level elite gymnasts and track stars.

Yes, many women in sports have their periods less frequently than than the rest of the general population, so it is possible that your period will come a little later. Take a look at this source on amenorrhea.

No, I dont think so. You just get it when you get it. Some girls don't do any sports and they get it at like 9 or 10. I had a friend who had it in the 4th grade. She was the first one I think of girls I knew that got it. You could ask your doctor though to make sure if it really worries you.

Female athletes sometimes don't get their periods because they produce a lot of testosterone, which is a male hormone. But this doesn't usually happen unless you're a professional athlete and training hard all the time.

Delay in the onset of menstruation can be caused by the amount of exercise you do, but usually it has to be sport at a fairly extreme, competitive level
