i have a lot of work to do today how can i avoid getting distracted?

Set goals and hold yourself to them. Usually if I have to do something and know I won't, I tell others so they can remind me to stay on task, or I refuse to eat until I complete at certain step. Amazing how hunger can stop procrastinating, lol.
Break the goals into managable chunks and reward yourself with breaks after certain steps are done.
Decide what little things can be put off till the end of the night or tomorrow, and do the important things first that cannot be put off further.

concentration plain and simple don't let anything distract you from your task(s) at hand the list idea is great but tackle the easy jobs first that way if you get in over your head and it takes a long time its your last project to worry about the others on the list have been completed

Focusing is something that needs practice to get really good at it. My professor recently suggested a speedreading class to improve attention spans.

Unfortunately for you, your best bet is to leave the computer. Get all your work together, make a list, then start with the hardest. Luckily for you, once you get started, it should be easier to go on.

go to some place where you have nothing around to distract you- a library or a classroom or somewhere- and force your self to sit and work-
