Mostly because many people don't really understand the difference between philosophy and religion, so they often confuse the two.

Not that it's easy to separate them, because it isn't. It's hard to put into words, and some aspects that people think of as religion really are philosophy. I think's where so much confusion comes from....people don't separate the philosophy from the religion in their own religion.

Maybe one way of looking at it is this: philosophy explores relationships and reality, whereas religion merely tells you what they are. Religion is dogma - philosophy is inquiry.

I think that there are quite a few religious questions that are completely appropriate to raise in this area... as long as the asker keeps in mind that philosophy takes a completely different approach to truth than theology.

So many people ask religious questions assuming that a specific religious framework is true. This, I think, is one of the last things a philosopher would do... they would want the entire framework demonstrated and proven first before you try and fit something new into that framework. If you turned a bunch of philosophers loose on a bunch of religions, you'd probably get more coherent (or at least logically consistent) theologies as a result, but they would probably stop resembling what they were originally intended to be.

Thus, a good religious AND philosophical question has to be a lot more fundamental. It has to not assume any specific religion is involved and it's going to have to expect a very rigorous analysis and response rather than just looking something up in a text.

This is also why theologians are able to answer so many more religious questions than philosophers. Philosophers try to get at truth, wisdom, and perfection. Theologians just go on divine inspiration and recorded precedents (i.e. they don't have to make sense).

Well, Matthew let me just say that I am not surprised. I use to answer and sometimes ask a question in the "Religious" section and found it to be more frustrating than enlightening. Maybe some people would just prefer to move into the philosophical section with the hope that they might learn something. Sarcasm and humor can be found in all of the categories (just like you find it in life). Hang in there!

In a way you are correct in reminding all how to use the forum. In another way I am sorry to tell you that it is incorrect not to associate a certain kind of religious thought with philosophy, because the final object of many philosophers in the past (but also in the present) is God (or whatever you may call a superior being).

What makes you think someone asking a religious question is being sarcastic or attempting to be funny? Perhaps some folks love knowledge about God. It's my job as a Christian to help them out.

What is the most perfect form of Sarcasm? And where can Sarcasm have deep meaning?

Doesn’t knowledge of religion count as knowledge? For many God is inseparable from any other aspect of their life.

For me, it would be more difficult to remove God, (my unique definition of God), from my philosophical view than to remove science from my physical viewpoint.
