I had sleep issues for about 18 months but that ended about 6-9 months ago. Why do I still feel exhausted and lethargic every day no matter how much sleep I get the night before? I've tried sleeping more, sleeping less, sleeping with it cold, sleeping with it hot, etc and nothing makes a difference.... How long does the "sleep debt" last if that is even true? Thanks!

So I guess I should include that I get up at 6am to workout 5 days a week and have a very healthy diet. I travel a bit for work, but even when I am in the office for a few wks at a time, it doesn't make much of a difference. I am happily married with an unbelievable job so those two are out. I never have any caffeine after 3pm and am consistently in bed by 10pm. I usually wake up 3-4 times per night, but even on nights where I sleep completely through, I still wake up exhausted... thanks

There could still be other, medical stuff going on that affects your sleep. The best way to find out about that is to talk with your doctor about a sleep study. That involves an overnight or longer stay in a hospital or free-standing sleep clinic, wired about 20 different ways, with each of these measurements being recorded. You will also be videotaped, to pick up stuff that doesn't necessarily show on the electronic monitoring, but you can opt out of the video part. All of these readings will be analyzed, and a report will be sent to your doctor in a few weeks time.
There are various types of sleep disturbances, some of which can be mitigated against and some of which can't. The only way to tell what is really happening, though, is with a sleep study.

Well, a few things came to mind when I read your question (in addition to the valid ideas raised by a few of your other answers). Do you take a multivitamin of any kind? What time of day do you take it? That may affect your sleep, too. I also go to the gym 5 days/week and live an active lifestyle -- and it IS exhausting! What kind of workout are you doing at the gym? I ask because it may be your workout that is draining all of your energy. Take a look at your routine and see if that has any bearing on the quality of your sleep.
My final idea is a simple one. Drink more water. I find that I become very tired and lethargic when I am thirsty. My mouth isn't dry and I don't realize that I am in need of water until I get soooo noticeably tired. Anyway, hope that helps. Good luck!

It would probably be best to talk to your doctor. Feeling exhausted after sleeping eight hours could mean that there could be other things with your health. Like sleep apnea, diabetes, and many other things.

first of all - go excersise. working out will give you more energy and self confidence. i tried it on myself. second - you may eat more sugar, but you will get energy only for short time, then you will be sleepy again. third - find yourself a hobby, that you can be passionated about. it will keep you up thinkning and busy, so you wont feel tired. fourth - try to get up early in the morning. when you wake up you may feel exhousted, but later, in few hours you will start to feel much better and it will last longer. defenetally dont wake up late or wake up in the morning and then fall asleep again, its the worst.

Tired is a state of mind. If you're excited about something (living, job, school, romance, exercise) your energy will flow with little to no sleep.
