Hey everyone, I am 18 years old and I see no point to life. I do not understand why I am here or why I have to suffer through many things. Why I have to work so hard in school and compete with billions of people and then have to worry about diseases and wars and injustices. That could have all been prevented with non-existence. Obviously, there is much good and beauty in life, but if I didn't exist i wouldn't know about them and I would not "feel" like i am losing out. What do you think?

In response to KIB: You make lots of assumptions. The first one is that God exists. The second one is that by opening a business I will not be competing with billions of others. That would actually increase the competition, by a lot. I just don't see why I have to deal with this dog eat dog world. People make things too hard and abstruse.

To John Doe 1st: I am not on the brink of suicide, not even close. But your statements were clever and useful for me. I thank you.

I think you are at that very confusing and tough point in life, where you're realizing that the good old days of being kid are coming to a close, and your eyes are being opened to the harsh realities of the world. But, trust me, you really will see things much differently in just a few years. You may feel all grown up, but in truth you are just starting out. The world is there, good and bad, for you to tkae, help, change, etc. in any way that you want. Its a wide horizon, and you are at an age where you can choose what direction and path to take. There are rewards in life that will make it all worthwile - careers, spouses, having children, helping others, being a member of your community. It'll come, just ride it out for now. I remember being your age, and feeling much the same way.

Hey, sorry to hear that, buddy. Really.
I've had a very full life; not necessarily what I'd call an "easy" life, but it's damn sure been interesting.
That said, Life is a series of ups and downs; there are no guarantees of any kind.
You could be born rich and come down with a deadly disease. You could be born dirt poor and win a lottery. You could make all the right moves and plans and still have everything turn to $hit, and you could be a total slacker and come out smelling like a rose. That's life.
If you're totally depressed and just barely hanging in there, just a step away from suicide, I doubt that I could talk you out of it, but I guess I'd try, anyway.
I will tell you this, though.
Nothing of any real value in life normally just falls into your lap; it requires some effort on your part, and some discipline.
I'm a very masterful musician and recording artist; guitar, keyboard, sax, and I've had a life that many would envy. None of it came easily and without effort.
But, hard work is its own reward. People recognize effort and excellence. Why? Because there ARE so many slackers in the world. The cream ALWAYS rises to the top, bud.
I've never had any trouble getting good paying jobs.
And in spite of making good $$, I'll still tell you that the best things in life...are not things. A person needs to be able to appreciate the small things, the subtle things. Otherwise, if all you seek is the "big rush" and the most expensive thrills, you're gonna be disappointed a LOT.
I wish we could sit down and talk over a beer or a good bottle of wine - assuming that's your thing.
I think I could give you some good word.
Good luck to you.

Who are you? What are you? What have you done for somebody else to make their exsistence seem worthwhile. I think you need to sit down and find out what you believe in. If you believe in Humanistic things, then you believe in nothing. Where do you want to go? Do you have a goal? Nothing is free. You are even indirectly paying for any advise you get on theis websight.
Grow up and become the person God wants you to be. Be a leader not a follower using Gods word. Unless of course Gods word would go against your human desires. But then again you are still going to have to answer to him when you die. I guess you really don't want to be behind Mother Teresa when God is talking to her saying, "You could have done more you know"! On a more serious note, find what gifts God has given you and use them the correct way. You'll do fine. Start your own business so you don't have to compete with the billions of others. Let them beat a path to your door. good Luck to you.

You get to choose your own “why.” Maybe something will happen to you that will induce a feeling of “this is why I’m here” or maybe a lot of time will pass and a passion will slowly evolve. It’s not mandatory to have a “why,” some people don’t, they just “are” and they live in the moment. If that’s their choice then who is to judge it? If you want to have a purpose then of course you will find one. Perhaps one will find you without you even looking for it. The wonderful thing is that you are young and thinking about these things - the world is yours and your life is unfolding on the pages of your days. It will undoubtedly be a good story since you are one who chooses to examine life. Let me caution you, however, if you are feeling that there is no point in going on. I assure you that there is a point. The point is to continue writing on the pages of your autobiography and in the end you’ll know the answers.

Nihilism is the word. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism
Perhaps there is - maybe there isn't. I believe at one time or another, everyone has questioned his own existence. It's normal to feel that way sometimes. It's not particularly good to feel that way all the time, though. Regardless of whether you feel this way or not - you are here. We are 'all in the same boat', and we do have choices. If you have that outlook all the time, it would be easy to make the choice to give up, but instead it would be far better to ride it out and find pleasurable things that far outweigh the negatives. Unfortunately, we can't know pleasure, without pain.

What a sad outlook for someone so young, If you wish to dwell on everything that is negative with life then you are doomed to live out your life as a miserable shadow of a man. You certainly can do this if you want, however if you do, it isn't life that is dealing you a rough deal, it's you who are giving up on life. There is no point t life, or IS there???? There is DEFINITELY no point to terminating life because you are bored with it. Perhaps you should take a tour of a children's hospital and see what young children have to deal with and it isn't going to get any better for them, but still, they are all happy, go visit an old folks home, do you think there isn't one of them who would happily give you their bed and take your youth and health. Do what you want, but you are in charge, that kind of makes you responsible for how your life is.

Actually, I think about this kind of stuff all the time. But after a while, you get to a point where you just keep thinking in circles coz you have two choices , to keep living or to not keep living. I mean, thinking about all this really has no constructive use to realistic situations and I guess that's what's kept me on my feet these few years....
I guess we're all supposed to find or discover the meaning of life coz its different for everybody, and that's what makes life succulant....
I'll always remember what someone once said to me, that is :"lets live the question"

i see and understand how you feel b/c i used to wonder the same thing. well, i believe in God, and well i don't know if u do or not, but everyone does have a purpose in life. you may not find it right now, but trust me, it will hit you later on in life even when you're not expecting it. just hang on tight hun and keep on doing what is right. your reward is on its way. it also helps to experiment with different hobbies and what not to see what you like, and maybe you should think of a career in life that follows it up. like i'm good at piano, acting, writing, and making people laugh. i know that there's something you're good at. just don't give up because there is something out there. stay positive hun =)

You're too young to see anything yet. But one day you will realize that you don't exist, that you do know, and that there's nothing better than feeling!0!
I remember how anxious I was at 18, oh boy!0! You gotta take it easy, and keep seeking and digging. Get a girl/boyfriend, a job, have a family. Whatever you do, don't stop digging; that'll take you where you want.

The great gift of all suicidal people, is that even when you are absolutely suicidal, and have nothing left to lose, you still have the fact that you didn't commit suicide. Yet. And there you go!You just got another minute of life. Enjoy it. It's free. Have a root beer. You can commit suicide in five minutes.
