Eleanor Porter wrote a series of books about Pollyanna (notice the spelling), starting with her as a young girl and continuing into her married life. She played a "glad game," in which she tried to always find something to be glad about, no matter how negative the circumstance (e.g., she was given a pair of crutches instead of the doll she wanted, so she was glad she didn't need them). It got to be a little too, too syrupy for some people--the term Pollyanna refers to someone who is unrealistically optimistic.
