Do you have to ask in a petrol station before filling up a jerry can or what? I've been told several different things and can't find anything on the internet to tell me.

If you are referring to the old military style Jerry can made of metal, there is nothing wrong with that. The only problem I've ever seen is filling gas into a glass container. That's a no-no.

As long as it is a proper jerry can and you clearly look over 16 you should be ok.

I never have and I've never had a problem. I have learned that is illegal to pump your own gas in the state of NJ.

If you have a car with you, then no, you shouldn't have to. However if you are on your own, without a car, then you may be asked what you are up to.
