i have a 96 ford taurus 3.0 v6 with about 150,000 miles on it. the check engine light is on and the obd scanner is reading catalyst system efficiency below threshold. does this mean one of the o2 sensors has gone bad or is it the catalytic converter itself? we recently had to replace the sensor in the very front of the car cause it was rocking (rpms jump around sharply like it is going to stall) and the scanner read system too lean. that seems to be holding up but now we have this new code and dont know exactly what is means. also, it is beginning to rock again. any help will be greatly appreciated, husband is a good mechanic but not when it comes to emmisions.

You have a cylinder missing. There are a dozen reasons it could be, and replacing parts at random trying to figure it out wouldn't be a good idea. It needs some troubleshooting to narrow things down. With that many miles, the cat and O2 sensors are probably bad, but you need to get the engine checked out before you start pouring money into replacing stuff. Neither of those things will make the engine rock.

You need to get out and find out about these things at the auto supply, asking other mechanics.

Go to the dealer and tell them in parts and services. They will give you some information.

Just remember they do want your business.
