I want to pretend to be homeless for a week and stand by the street with a cardboard sign and tattered clothing to see how much money I could make in a week compared to the salary of a regular job. Would it be really wrong of me to do this even though it's not for the purpose of money and I'll even donate the money to a homeless shelter or charity?

Be prepared to be profoundly affected. You sound as if you think you can just do this and go back to your normal life. If you "pretend" to be homeless you will be treated like a homeless person.
Do you know how homeless people are treated? Typically ignoring, indifference, outright hostility, disdain. Get ready to be hated. Have you ever been hated and shunned for a long period of time?

What's your motivation? To write a research paper on it or looking for an easier career?
If you donate the money to charity, it doesn't sound all that bad, but you are still taking advantage of the generosity of others.

Not if it was an experiment and you have something to learn from it. If you bum any money off people I would suggest donating it to a good cause.

It's not gonna be horrible, but the sociology society may think that it's immoral and won't publish your paper on the issue if you decided to report your finding.

If you will donate the money then do it. If you're young you might be approached by the police or CPS.
