I know someone that used to cut themselves. She stopped without therapy. I was wondering what causes you to do this, and how do you just up and stop one day.

i used to cut myself. i did over like four years. i don't anymore though. i've found other ways of releasing my stress and depression.

when i was doing it, i was under a lot of emotional stress...i was filled with anger and self-loathing and wanted nothing more than to run away, but where? there simply was no other way for me to get out my frustration -- and it actually felt good. it relieved my mental pain cause i could focus on the physical pain. i always hid it though, only like two people know i ever did it. as for stopping, i can't say that i have, actually. all i can say is that my stress level has not pushed me to and it's been like eight years...i would still consider it if i needed to, i suppose...

Yes i have.....at first i did it becasue i just wanted to see if it would hurt me(i wasnt sad or nothin i just wanted to see...weird huh?)...ne way then when i would be upset i would vut because i had serious emotional issues..i hurt so much inside n i kind of like feeling pain in a place i could pinpoint and i knew it would heal(unlike my emotional pain which i had no control over)...

Also u know how some people blame thereselves for things hat they may have had no control over?...well that wuz me n i felt like it wuz all my fault n i felt so depressed so i would be in such a state of anger that i would want to cause myself more harm for those things....

There are too many reasons to list and i dont think u or anyone else would understand those reasons.....

I cant say EXACTLY wut led me to do it but i havent cut for 2 years already...i dont find the need to do it any more... I guess now i just hold my anger inside(bottled up...still unhealthy..butt wut can i do)

People do this because they cant bear the emotional pain so they cause themselves physical pain in order to concentrate in that pain and forget at least for a little bit that emotional pain. Im sure that you can stop this without therapy. that was really good of your friend and congrats to her.

Some people can be thier own therapist and teach themselves. This takes a lot of mental strength to do this. Your friend could've also found another outlet for his/her depression.

I think he or she stopped when then found that they could change the way they think about them self. In order to change the way you feel about something is change the way you think about it.

It is possible they never stopped and they are hiding it very well.
