Thomas Edison - the world famous American Telegrapher [Telegraph Operator] invented the first light-bulb after months of research which lasted for about 1000 hours. He discovered that the tungsten filament in the bulb was the best.

Thomas Edison carried out the first ever display of public street lighting in London on Holborn Viaduct [sorry, do not know the date for this, but think there is a plaque].

Well, obviously it was Thomas Edison because he was American.

However, before he actually invented the light bulb, Joseph Swann had a street in Manchester lit with the things. But for some reason, that doesn't count as "inventing" them.

Seriously though, Edison and Swan agreed to share the credit and set up a company together to produce light bulbs.

Thomas Edison was credited with the first light bulb, but in reality he was able to mass produce them and history has given him the credit.
