Should a sex offender be able to train in the martial arts? Should they be able to achieve black belt status?
If not... WHY?
I know the "why" may seem obvious, but even sex offenders will need to defend themselves.

Consider if the sex offender is still on probation, supervised release or fully released.
Just becuase they are in the sex offender database and on a website doesn't mean they are still on probation.

ONE: A child victim was NOT labeled in the court documents
TWO: A child victim WAS labeled in the court documents

People are always judging sex offenders. First you need to know what the person did. I am not saying the all sex offenders did nothing wrong but there are some out there that is on the list for crazy things like 19 sleeping with 16, a child seeing a porn movie on accident when going through a divorce. Did you know that you can be charged with indecent liberties with a minor for a child seeing you naked even as a parent if someone wanted to report you to DSS? That will make you a register sex offender. So no I don't think it is wrong for a sex offender to take martial arts.

Several bloggers on this forum misunderstand what laws and convictions are associated with "sex offenders" and relate that "it depends on the offense..." ..."an underage person viewing a porn movie"....etc. These are NOT offenses that result in a "Sex Offender" conviction.
The misunderstanding of what is considered a "sex offender" provides you with misinformation.
As a convicted sex offender there is nothing that would prohibit the training in martial arts.
To have a better understanding of "sex offender" convictions, the Sex Offender Notification Act or Megan's Law, and related issues, you should query the "

Since to obtain a black belt one must have a certain level of self awareness and restraint .... maybe we should REQUIRE sex offenders to work towards a black belt!
The martial arts are not all about fighting (in spite of all of the "kung fu fighting" movies) but about self awareness, respect and discipline!
It might be a good thing for sexual offenders to train under a true master of the martial arts!

Well, I don't see how training in the martial arts would make you a more dangerous sex offender per se . . . and since this is usually a free country . . . I would say they can train in whatever they want.
Is there a study that correlates martial arts to repeated sex offenders? I guess anything is possible . . .

"Sex Offender" is a meaningless term in this context.
If someone was convicted of urinating in public, or getting caught skinny-dipping, or having sex with his wife in a public place -- why would that have any impact on whether they should be allowed to learn or advance in that particular skill?
Or are you talking just about rapists and child molesters, which is a tiny fraction of the people who get the label "sex offender".
