"Relations between the two border countries have only grown worse since Bush signed a law calling for construction of more than 700 miles of new fencing along the long border the two countries share. Calderon has lambasted the fence — a mix of physical and high-tech barriers. He likens it to the Berlin Wall, and argues that both countries need to improve Mexico's economy to lessen the desire to seek work in the United States."
(Why is it our responsibility to improve Mexicos economy? The Berlin Wall divided a country in two, we are talking about 2 countries already divided, and how to stay that way.)
"Before their talks, Calderon had a tough message for Bush: The United States must do more to solve thorny issues of drug-trafficking and immigration."
(I may be wrong but it seems that we're trying to solve the issues, but MEXICO isn't doing anything, because police and politicians are corrupt and turn a blind eye.) Should we use a more aggressive method than just a fence?

funny how the countries of the world always say its Americas responsibility to fix their problems, but when we do they complain that we are "ACTING UNILATERALLY"
I am tired of this "America owes us" mentality and the fact that when you gripe about having to go out of your way accomodate illegal immigrants, suddenly youre a racist. I have several members of my family that are bi-racial or of other than anglo descent, but if i complain about having to put up with my state requiring me to speak spanish to get a government job, i am discriminating. I work at a bank and the law says that primary ID must be in English, and have an expiration date, but the management makes us look the other way when illegals come in to open accounts so they can get the money.
screw that and screw mexico too
we should start shooting them on the border just like the east germans used to, so it really will be like the Berlin Wall

Give me a freaking break!
Personally, I think the fence is a stupid idea. If we really want to get tough, we should take a page from Mexico's immigration code and use it ourselves. If you're not familiar with it, you can read a bit about it here:
http://www.mnforsustain.org/Mexicos%20Immigration%20Law%20in%20US.pdf
They have very strict standards that are very clear:
You must enter their country LEGALLY or you will be fined, imprisoned and/or deported. Being an illegal immigrant in Mexico is a serious offense.
You must prove your ability to support yourself and your dependants (using a formula devised by the Mexican government)AND prove your ability to be an asset to the economic development of Mexico AND prove yourself to be an individual of good character with no criminal record.

fencing the border is just a waste of tax payer money. They should allow open season on drug trafficker, with a tax write off if you can nap some number of mules. Of course this law must also include that you need proof before killing the traffickers.

We have in a sense, already done our bit to ruin Mexico.
You go there now and you feel as if you are still in the USA with WalMarts and WalGreens and Starbucks everywhere.
You look for products made in Mexico and all you can find are products made in the China.
Mexico depends on the tourist trade. I for one am no longer interested in visiting Mexico as a tourist.

I would love to read the original story. It sounds like America is policing the borders that Mexico doesn't want.

Typical for them to blame us for THEIR issues. How about they deal better with drug trafficing? Drugs are coming from THEIR country.
THEY should better deal with their economy. Their gov. at all levels has tons of corruption and THEY actively work to keep people down.
While I think the fence is dumb, its our perogative to build it. We're not trying to keep people in (like the Berlin wall) but trying to keep people out and secure OUR sovreign border.

because maybe the US is the only one out of the deal that want to keep the illegals out!
I never heard an American sneak into Mexico (except escaped criminals)

That is the worlds view of the USA we need to fix thier problems because they can't. Sooner or later you would think we would both realize that we can't either.
