I have a cow skin which has gone as stiff as a board. Does anyone know why this happens, or what I can do to make it supple again?

Hides have to be 'maintained' even after they are tanned. Try some bear grease, lay it flat and use a soft cloth and work in circular motion. let it dry and repeat as often as necessary. This should be done at least once a year. You can get bear grease at a leather shop or a good boot store. It helps your leather items, boots- coats, etc stay supple and water resistant.

The Inuit Indians ( Eskimos) used to chew leather to make it supple, something to do on those night when it is all reality shows on the box.

You need to work some grease into the back of it to keep it supple

You've washed it haven't you!!!!!

If you go to any saddlers, you can get a bar of saddle soap( not expensive). Use a damp cloth and rub a good amount of the saddle soap onto the cloth, and rub it all over the backside of the hide. This will soften it up. Also it won't leave greasy deposits on your floor.

Oh dear God...whatever you do, do not soak it in water. Neatsfoot oil works really well for restoring dried out leather. You can find it at any ranch supply store or possibly a bootmaker's shop. Its very cheap and has no offensive odors.

Soak it in water? I haven't got a clue, but if it's rigid it probably wasn't treated properly in the first place.
