Some people!!!! You just gotta say "you're welcome" and just walk/drive off. I know they were very rude but, just think of that old saying WWJD!

I hear you man. I have given larger amounts and received the same. I am going to start doing the same as suggested in the answers you have received, send em to the food lines and shelters. I have also talked to some who beg for a living and make more than the average person who works at a regular job, and tax free. Some even have the gall to use wheelchairs and crutches to gain sympathy. I usually remind them to be thankful that they got anything from me as I used to respond to beggars by telling them to get a job.

I never give the homeless money for that reason. If they asked me that I would ask for it back. I got tired of the BS and quit giving them money all together, I do but them a sandwich or coffee/tea or the like. Most homeless people asking for money make between 100,000.00-200,000.00 dollars per year. I guess it's easier than working. You will note that I said MOST and not ALL because some homeless are mental patients who can't work that's why I give them the food. You just can't tell by looking at someone.

I would've said, "Well, yeah, b/c it's not MY fault that you made poor decisions which caused you to be homeless." I NEVER give homeless people $$ b/c I've actually seen one guy in DE panhandle on the street and walk away and get into his Mercedes Benz! I'm not their source of income, nor is it my responsibility to provide it to them if they're not my employee, so why should I waste my hard earned $$ on someone that can't get a job and better their own situation! Not only that, but then they'll target you every time they see you b/c you were generous just 1 time to offer them $$!

I would repeat the question back to them. (Emphasis on the word "YOU"). Smile and be on your way.
Even by giving what you did, you've surpassed what most people do in that situation. You seem almost apologetic about "only" giving $2.00. In fact, that's $2.00 that YOU could have used for yourself. And, it's most likely $2.00 more than 99% of the people that passed that person on any given day. You did what you could. No one can ask more of you than that.

I would have just said "Yes, sorry, if you don't want it, you can give it back." Don't let this sour you on helping the less fortunate, many are mentally ill and it was very compassionate of you to give money.

Grab it back! Beggers can make upwards of 70 to 80k a year tax free. It's better to point them to a home shelter or homeless aid agency and to donate to that, than to give directly. I'm not trying to be mean, just saying that what you give ought to really help, not line someones pockets.

"Yes. Sorry." I wouldn't get upset because the homeless person needs $ desparately & is very hungry.

that is exactly why I never give to homeless people.
I give directly to homeless shelters, and when a homeless person asks me for money, I tell them to go to the nearest homeless shelter.
