First thing I would do would be get an insecticide, Ortho and
Scott seem to have good products. Then spread it over the affected area. I usually do this once a month during the early spring and summer months. Then take a soil sample to your local extent ion office. If you don't have an extent ion office then put down a good fertilizer, dolomite lime and iron sulfate. Then find out which type of grass or grass mix grows well and reseed.

try nematodes, lol, it's a micro organism that eats grubs and larva, plus , plus they are enviro , safe and natural you can get them at your or most garden centres, you add them to water and pray them all over the lawns and in no time the grass is growing really nice with no brown spots ei, no more grubs and larva, they are cool looking under the microscope to they look like clear worms ,just follow the directions they are great , i wish everyone would use them instead of chemicals they really work well , hope this helps

for those who dont know craneflys are very damaging to grass. Its natural predator is a wasp, which for some reason has been very sparse this last year. I dont remember seeing a single wasp.

If you want your grass back you will need to get a pesticide and kill them off first and then begin reseeding the lawn.

Yes that's why your lawn grass has died...too many larva. I'm not sure if they eat grass roots but perhaps insects in the soil which could alter the earths chemistry and stunting growth.

Some one is looking for work. has lawn been given food as of late? it looks as though the lawn needs some tlc.
SUGGEST you do some basic internet searches non lawns be4 spending a fortune on decking, sites such as, scotts. ect or pop into garden centre they usually have the leaflets on lawn care. leather jackets will not destroy a lawn

Im no landscaper but I would imagine if they destroyed your grass before then they will probably do it again and grass is expensive. Have you tried getting an exterminator or pesticide and then laying grass down. I know you dont want to waste all that money for them bugs to kill it again!

What you have is leather jackets and you need to use an insecticide drench on your lawn to kill off the leather jackets, then reseed your lawn.

wasps and bees are sparse because they sense impending doom... go go gadget global warming!

I'd go with "praying" (haha) beneficial nematodes, but you're going to have to let them do their thing for a while before you plant new grass.
