Most rumors are lies or half truths. Some people thrive on both such as low level celebrities and tabloids. By low level celebs I mean, for ex. Paris, Nicole, Brittney, etc.... They're press hounds and attention seekers. They don't care if it's a good rumor or bad one as long as it's garnering attention. Others, classy celebs, ex. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, etc....try to stay out of the public eye. They talk like they have sense and they don't start rumors about one another.

In my minds eye a rumor is never a good thing, because generally it's generated to hurt someone or cause trouble for someone. It's hardly ever benign.

Yes; just look at Paris Hilton. The more sex tapes she makes and tables she dances on, the more attention she gets. It all depends on what kind of celebrity you are. If you are a Paris {Hilton} or Nicole {Richie}, it will be good for you. If you are more along the lines of a Brittany {Spears}, chances are, you are totally screwed and you will shave your head and chase random SUVs with umbrellas. It all depends on who it is we are talking about.
