after reading the yahoo article and spending months worrying over who, what and where my career is going, I have not been fired, but have been stripped of all my duties (the reason originally was so that I could free myself up to help "run" the company) Now I'm just sitting here, collecting a paycheck and not doing much for the company at all. There is no hostility around me, but should I just go to my boss and say "do you want me to leave or stay?" "Give me something to do." or stay put and collect the paycheck that feeds my family.

i was put in a very "powerful" position, my boss still hasn't found his nitch, so I'm in limbo until he finds his. I've asked others for help, however, they feel threatened, like I'm invading their space and/or watching for the owner. A lot has fallen through the cracks since I let go of a lot of the responsibilities put on me before, sales are down, customers are angry, but I am not to "clean up" any more. The boat is suppose to learn to sail without my picking up the pieces. I find myself in a lot of fire drills at times and for the rest of the time, I am constantly having people in my office asking me what's going on with the company.? I'm telling them to be calm and wait it out. The confusion is unbearable! I've already had the "adult" conversation with my boss and he's told me to be patient and things will be turning around soon. Looking from the outside in though, the grass doesn't look too green. Any thoughts?

If the original reason given by your boss was so that you could free yourself up to help run the company, then go to him and advise him that you are willing and ready to take up your assignment towards running the company. This will give you an opportunity to know what they really have in store for you.

My first suggestion would have been that you leave but i understand that you need to feed your family. I sincerely hope that this is not an attempt by your company to push you through the door. I wish for you, all the best.

Sounds like they are giving you the opportunity to show initiative. Dont just sit around, rather, go see if any of your co-workers needs help. Especially ones that do a different job than you. Show you are taking the initiative to learn as much as you can to better help your company grow.

Why ask your boss? Empower yourself and determine what's best for yourself and then go do it. Persue your passion. One of my favorite ideas is "Skills, Knowledge, Behaviors" Good behaviors ought to lead you to follow your passion. You will then seek knowledge about your chosen profession. Apply what you learn and you will become skilled. Everyone wants and plenty of work for skilled, knowledgable people. You have a great opportunity right now, a paycheck and time to persue your passion. Use the time wisely and good luck. I hope you do something you love!

Keep collecting that pay check, and start looking for a better job.

Don't quit without having a back up plan. You need to start making one right now, in case they do decide to let you go.

When I am left with nothing to do I ask the people above me or my co-workers if there is anything they need me to do. At least it shows you are willing to do work if you are given any. If they say no, then I just stay being bored to death and surf the web.... or classifieds... ha ha.

I'd go to your boss and be very adult and ask for a redefining of your position

Think of ways to improve the current situation. Research them thoroughly. Then present them to your superiors.
