I have two beautiful river birches in our front landscaping, and I'd like to plant something low in front of them, preferrably with color. I don't want to distract from the bark though, so nothing flashy. I've tried rose shrubs, and Knockout Roses, both of which didn't make it. Any ideas? OH - we also have bunnies nearby who eat everything in sight. Thanks!

Yellow dafodils are an excellent surrounding for trees of all kinds. Plus, you don't have to re-plant every year, they just keep coming back. Also, if you are like my wife and adore hostas, those do well around or halfway around birches.

Many new flowering shrubs offer both color and ease of growth. There are several new dwarf weigela varieties that get only 10-12" tall. One has creamy variegted leaves and the other have burgundy leaves. There are also large varieties. I wrote an article called "All about Weigela" that can offer more help. Simply search on that phrase.

Creeping Phlox are very pretty, I have some planed in front of a lot of my trees and they look beautiful. They are a small ground cover plant and they have really pretty blooms. You can get them a variety of colors. Mine are purple and I LOVE THEM.
