Well I tore my ACL and did have surgery. I was off of crutches in a couple days and walking around. I had a new kind of surgery that you might ask about. Basically they take an ACL out of a dead person and zip it in there for you. Less recovery time and I can tell you it is the best. I was swollen for a few days and off my feet, but like I said, I took my first steps in a couple days.
I had a complete tear so surgery was required. Your MRI results will tell you how bad it is and if you will need surgery.
Recovery time will vary based on the surgery, your healing time and how hard you work at it. The rehad is painful but worth it. I worked relatively hard at it and I have complete use of my knee and no pain. I am not as strong as I once was but that is because I did work as hard as I could have.

If it's torn all the way through you can expect to be out of commission for a while. If it's only a partial tear you'll probably need the crutches for another week or so and then the brace for 4-6 weeks to make sure it heals all the way through.

Hi, I snapped my Anterior Cruciate Ligament totally playing rugby.
It took 4 years for the doctors to actually find out what was wrong, and the length of time from injury to repair is crucial.

The operation took a couple of hours, followed by 1 year of physiotherapy. It was done by keyhole surgery, and involved taking a ligament from my lower leg, and screwing it in place

I still have problems now to be honest, but at least I don't fall flat on my face.

Generally, with proper care, recovery is average of 9 months and is actually more disabilitating than a broken leg.
Seek advice from the proper authorities as it depends on the severity of the injury.
