Potting soil will work, but that is pretty expensive. Sand can be bought in bags, as well as top soil, or just plain dirt. If you have some 5 gallon buckets and a shovel, depending on where you live, go to the beach, or into the woods, or ask your friends, or go by a construction site and ask permission to fill a couple of buckets. I helped my son clean the gutters in front of his house, and we ended up with 3 wheelbarrows full of soil. Look around, and i bet you will find more than you need, without having to pay for any of it. Good luck!

Potting soil is OK, but very expensive. If you must buy something, buy steer manure -- it's about 1/5th the cost of potting soil, and is the cheapest thing you can buy. Mix it in with the soil that you have in the low areas (don't just dump it in the 'hole').

Look for something called garden soil. It is heavier than dirt and doesn't have perlite, vermiculite or any of the unnecessary additives. It is also slightly less expensive than potting soil.

look at the cause first. erosion, rotten stump, sink hole, decomposinhg construction waste....

if just a low spot in an inconspicuous place just fill
with whatever of the above is handy. just be aware that you
may have to fill again next year if you don't understand the
cause.

pine cones, twigs, leaves, gutter clean out, ...all the organic stuff will compact as it decomposes.

sand, gravel, rocks..then top with organic matter and sod or seed.

but address the sink hole or erosion issues if a problem or all your work will disappear.

You will have to mix it in and I would use sand also to make sure that you will have a better drainage.

Good Luck.
