Any recommendations? Besides the actual novels based off the movies.

I agree that Timothy Zahn's books are probably the best of the "classic" Star Wars novels. Another good one is "Shadows of the Empire," by Steve Perry. It's set in between Episodes V and VI, it was so popular at one point that there were action figures, comic books, and a video game based on the characters from the book.

Shadows Of the Empire is by far one of the bests (it takes place between episodes 5 and 6) As a Han Solo fan the Han Solo trilogy is one of my favorents (but they are good wether or not you are a solo fan) they run from when solo was about 10 up to meeting Luke and Kenobi in the Cantina at the beging of episode 4. I also loved the X-Wing series. The Thrawn trilogy was also an excelent series. If you get done with these you can start on the Jedi Acadamey trilogy. Enjoy reading, and may the force be with you.

The best book set after the movies starts out with, "Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zhan. This is the first book of The Thrawn Trilogy. I would recommend this book to all Star Wars fans. It is a great set.

The "Heir to the Empire" Trilogy by Timothy Zahn are probably the best expanded universe Star Wars books out there.
